WE ARE URGENTLY IN NEED OF YOUR SUPPORT.
WOW is the oldest women’s and transgender people's theater collective in the country; a 28-year-old, non-hierarchically-run black box theater space. WOW especially welcomes women and transpeople of color, and women and trans people who identify as lesbians, bisexual and queer. We acknowledge the links between different kinds of oppressions and strive to be open to all sexualities and spiritualities, to be multilingual and intergenerational, and to challenge all oppressions including racism, classism, ableism, sexism, ageism, and sizeism. We provide a working theater space to our members & the technical support to create and produce works according to our own visions, and regardless of economic status.
NOW, for the first time in WOW’s story, we own our space. In The Spring of 2005, the city of New York sold the tenants of 59-61 East 4th Street our beloved home for only 1 dollar. Only 1 dollar!
But - yes - there’s a catch — WOW needs to raise $250,000 to renovate our space and bring the building up to code.
Donations have been pouring in from all corners of the world and we are so thankful for the generosity of our friends. We have raised more than 3/4 of the total, but are not there yet! So we take a moment to ask you: will you support WOW?
Please consider a couple of things:
While we now have an elevator available 24-7 for the first time in our history, we still do not have an ADA-approved restroom. When the renovation of the theater is complete, we will be fully accessible. YOUR DONATION WILL HELP MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR OUR SPACE TO BECOME TRULY WELCOMING TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. This matters very much to us; we hope it matters to you.
Second, WOW Café Theater has always survived based on ticket sales alone. This means that every single audience member has been directly responsible for keeping us alive — thank you so much! Now, we desperately need our communities to step up and sustain WOW in a more direct way. Your donation of $25 or $25,500 will make such a difference towards our goal— you know how much you can afford to give, and every contribution is equally important.
donations of any size!
