25
years ago 36 shows from 8 countries were performed over the course of
11 days. What
began as an international women's theater festival grew to what is now a year-round festival of
performance by women and transpeople in NYC's East Village.

WOW Café Theater is a women's and
transpeople's collective in NYC's East
Village that provides a working theater space to its members, as well
as the technical support to create and produce work. |
^ Terry Dame |
WOW has served as
an incubator for such innovative performers as Holly Hughes, Split Britches, Carmelita Tropicana and the Five Lesbian Brothers.
|
^ Diyaa, formerly known as Dred |
It grants producing time to
artists according to their level of activity as collective members, and
collects a percentage of ticket sales in lieu of rent. This makes the
space accessible and affordable for experimental work or for producing
artists just beginning to develop an audience.

WOW
Café Theater is the city's only collectively run theater
committed to
women
and trans artists. Now in its 25th year, WOW serves as a
platform for
performing
artists at all career levels and in all disciplines in producing
their
own work. Its flexible, collective governance structure allows the
organization
to respond to the artistic and production needs of its members,
ensuring
that the work presented by WOW is always on the cutting edge of
contemporary
performance.
Last
year, WOW launched its first large-scale fundraising
effort, a capital
campaign
to help us buy our theater. In October, 2005 the City of New York
sold
us our building for $1, with the caveat that each tenant raise the
funds
to renovate the building. WOW's share of renovation costs is $125,000.
So
far we have raised over $90,000! We've still got a ways to
go. Your
attendance
at our 25 year celebration will bring us closer to raising our
renovation
costs.
