Demystifying Shibari Rope Suspension

Sunday, November 6, 2022
3:00pm-5:00pm
In person at WOW Cafe Theater and live on Zoom

Tickets: $10-$50 sliding scale on Eventbrite or at the door

(Arrive early if you’re buying a ticket at the door!)

If rope suspension is something you’ve been curious about, this is a unique opportunity to see a suspension up close and to hear a rope suspension bottom and top speak openly and in detail about their experiences before, during and after a suspension, and to answer *your* questions.

All levels of experience welcome! (No prior rope experience required.)

No partner or materials needed.

In this demonstration, you’ll have a front row seat to a real rope suspension–not a choreographed suspension performance, or a static photo, but a rope suspension scene by Parker & Juniper just like what they might do in private or at a rope play party.

Some of the topics addressed include: What does it feel like to be suspended? What thoughts and emotions do people experience while suspended in rope? How difficult is it really, and can anybody do it? Is it painful? Is it erotic? (Spoiler: it’s different for everyone, but we can share with you our unvarnished answers as individuals based on our significant suspension experience.)

Before and after and (to the extent possible) during the suspension, Juniper and Parker will narrate what they each are doing and thinking and feeling. Viewers are encouraged to reflect on what they see and to ask questions that come up for them. No question is too basic or obvious!

Please note: Experiences in suspension are different for everyone. We have our own filters based on our backgrounds, contexts, identities, privileges, capacities and limitations, etc. We do not speak for all rope suspension tops or rope suspension bottoms. We speak honestly as best we can based on our own experiences and perspectives, which might be different from yours or other people’s.

Also note: This is not a step-by-step “how to” class on suspension techniques. The purpose of this demonstration is to demonstrate and demystify shibari rope suspension, not to teach attendees how to suspend. Learning to suspend is a process that builds upon developing skills and experience with rope on the ground. Rope suspension is a high-risk activity that people should not attempt without appropriate equipment, skills/training, and safety precautions.

About the presenters:

Juniper Quinn  (she/they) has been bottoming in rope for two years and loves suspension for its physical and mental challenge, its demand for presence and mindfulness, and the opportunity to make interesting shapes in the air!

Parker RopeBoi (they) has been doing rope suspension, primarily as a rope top and a self-suspender, for over 12 years, and have presented workshops and performances internationally. They love many things about rope suspension, including the ability to enable and disable different bodily possibilities, play with three-dimensional space, and engage in a collaborative dance that can have many different feelings and meanings.

General Information

All attendees must be over the age of 18 years old.

This is a “hybrid” event with both in-person and online (Zoom) options for participation.

There is sliding scale pricing–we appreciate your support at the level that you can. Supporter level tickets enable us to provide this programming at reduced price tickets to make rope education more accessible.

People who purchase a Zoom ticket will receive the Zoom link before the start of the event. Please do not wait until the last minute to purchase your Zoom ticket, so that you get the link in time.

All in-person attendees must be up-to-date on their COVID vaccines, meaning the original vaccine course plus a booster if you are eligible to receive a booster.

We encourage (but do not require) COVID testing. If you show a negative COVID test (such as a lab result or a photo of home test) from within 24 hours of the event at the door, then a mask is optional (not required). If you not have a negative COVID test result from within 24 hours, then a mask is required except for temporarily temporarily taking off your mask to eat or drink.

The presenters will be unmasked, and will have tested negative for COVID on the day of the event.

If you test positive for COVID or you are exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID, or if you’re experiencing COVID-like symptoms on the day of the workshop, do not attend the in-person event and we encourage you to purchase a Zoom ticket instead.

The space is located on the 4th floor of a building that has an elevator. There is an ADA-compliant accessible single-stall bathroom inside the workshop space. There is also a non-accessible single-stall bathroom. The floors inside the space are marley flooring (smooth dance studio flooring).
