Predicament Play workshop

with Parker & Juniper

Oh, the predicament!

Predicament play is consensual play in which we creating a set of parameters–using rope, other materials, and creative tools and techniques–that create an agonizing, tantalizing dilemma.

Faced with a challenge and choice, the person in rope must choose among different incentives or disincentives, such as to lean into one sensation and pull away from another. Predicaments often involve a slow-burn, building up of intensity, from something that is set in motion initially as relatively sustainable but then becomes more difficult/painful/overwhelming over the ensuing seconds and minutes.

Predicament play can appeal to our more creative, quirky, and even ridiculous desires, bringing out our inner mad-scientist sadists & James Bond escape artists. A predicament could be a complex, intricate machine–or could be as simple as standing on one leg until that becomes unbearable. Predicaments tend to involve a choice between “rock and a hard place”–a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” dilemma–while trying to figure a way out (even when there’s probably no way out–just a choice between one trap and another).

In this workshop, real life partners Parker and Juniper will share some of our favorite techniques for crafting predicaments, safety precautions and risk mitigation, calibrating and adjusting a predicament mid-scene, some useful ties and tools,(including some nefarious uses of everyday items). They will demonstrate some predicament play scenes to inspire your own explorations into predicament play.

About the Presenters:

Parker RopeBoi (they) is New York City-based queer, non-binary, internationally recognized rope artist who has been performing and teaching rope/shibari since 2009.  Selected recent & upcoming credits include producing and performing in Elevation & Elation: a night of shibari performance art, which received support from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council; curating the Shibari Gallery event series at a Chelsea NYC gallery space; performing at Twisted Windows and the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco; presenting at Tethered Together; and presenting at the Exist self-tying conference in Montreal.  Known for daredevil rope suspension performances, Parker is a skilled shibari rigger and self-suspender who enjoys sharing their passion for rope.  Parker considers rope to be a versatile medium for enabling and disabling corporeal possibilities, presenting and overcoming impasses, instigating intense sensations, and suspending bodies in space. Parker seeks to foster an inclusive, affirming environment for people of all bodies, histories, and identifications to learn and enjoy rope.

Juniper Quinn (they/she) is a bubbly rope switch who loves using rope as a tool for pain, pleasure, silliness, and connection. As a rope bottom, Juniper delights in creating interesting shapes in the air, challenging herself both physically and mentally, and exploring new possibilities through self-tying. Juniper enjoys rope’s demand for presence and mindfulness and employs a deep sense of connection to her body and to her partners when tying.
