create, inc. presents: Their Eyes Were Watching God
By: Zora Neale Hurston
Adapted by: Laurence Holder
Directed by: Marishka S. Phillips
With: Lauren Marissa Smith as Janie Mae Crawford
In partnership with the Wow Cafe Theatre, create, inc has the unique privilege of producing the premier of famed playwright and New York theatre extraordinaire Laurence Holder‘s stage adaptation of the iconic novel Their Eyes Watching Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston.
The novel originally published in 1937 and out of print for decades, was rediscovered in the late 1970s by newly developed black studies programs at universities and colleges around the country, and lauded by academics and writers as a seminal work for both African American and women’s literature. The story of the stage play is unchanged from the novel. It recounts the life and loves of Janie Mae Crawford, a mixed raced black woman from rural Florida born the byproduct of rape. Her journey over the 30 years of the play takes her from child bride to liberated woman. The genius of Hurston is showcased by the story as well as her use of language, which literary critic Maria J. Johnson likens to the blues. The stage adaptation uses all of Hurston’s original text.
